Thousand Acre Camp Pendleton Fire Sends Smoke East Wednesday

Posted October 9, 2008, 6:38 AM.

A wildfire on the Camp Pendleton Marine Base Wednesday afternoon charred a thousand acres, according to news reports, and sent smoke eastward across Fallbrook, Rainbow and the Temecula Valley.

The fire reportedly broke out around 3:30pm, and spread rapidly. At midnight, it was 70% contained. The Camp Pendleton web site said that it has "slowed considerably on three sides".

No structures were threatened, and no evacuations were necessary. The cause of the fire was not immediately known.

Fighting the fire were ten Marine brush truck teams, along with twenty fire engines from surrounding areas.

A plume of smoke was visible along Interstate 15 from south of Escondido through the Temecula Valley Wednesday evening. At dusk, smoke was thick around Agua Tibia mountain, many miles east of the fire.
