Monsoonal moisture to leave region; July 25-26 storm totals

By Reginald Stanley. Posted August 1, 2021, 3:40 AM.

Widespread showers and thunderstorms resulted from a major surge of monsoonal moisture into the region on July 25-26th, leaving nearly all inland locations with measurable rainfall by the end of the month.

Storm totals varied where rain did fall, from 0.12 inches in Riverside to as high as 1.10 inches in East Highland (courtesy of Peter Michas). An impressive 0.98 inches was also recorded at WeatherCurrents' station in Anza. Totals of 0.38 inches were observed in both French Valley and East Hemet, while 0.31 inches was reported in Temecula Valley's Wine Country (courtesy of Jim Sappington). Totals within the city of Murrieta itself varied from 0.18 inches in northwestern Murrieta to 0.32 inches in the central part of the city. North of Los Angeles, 0.13 inches was recorded at WeatherCurrents's station in Pinon Hills, in the northern San Gabriel Mountains. WeatherCurrents' station in Simi Valley, northwest of Los Angeles, was the only WeatherCurrents station to not record any measurable rainfall from the event. WeatherCurrents' stations in Lake Elsinore and Riverside (Presidential Park) continued to have rain gauge problems, while stations in Beaumont (Cherry Valley) and Wildomar remained offline.

Thunderstorm activity remained confined mostly to the mountains and deserts through July 31st. An upper level trough off the West Coast is beginning to bring drier air down into the region, largely ending monsoonal moisture in the mountains and deserts this week.
