Remnants of Hurricane Norbert combined with monsoonal moisture helped produce thunderstorms in Southern California on Sunday and Monday.
Rainfall totals were highly variable, ranging from over 3 inches in Hemet to nothing at all in some locations. Most of the heavy rainfall from thunderstorms occurred on Sunday, especially in the afternoon in the greater Riverside-San Bernardino area. Unlike previous events, this time the thunderstorms largely bypassed the Temecula and Menifee valleys, resulting in very little or no rainfall being recorded there. However, Jim Sappington of Temecula Valley's Wine Country reported 3/4 inches of rainfall on Sunday. In contrast, the communities of Riverside, San Bernardino and Hemet were hit particularly hard by thunderstorms on Sunday afternoon. Near Hemet, Monty Parrott reported 0.42 inches in East San Jacinto. In East Highland, Peter Michas reported a total of 0.37 inches.
Monsoonal moisture had largely departed from the region by Monday evening, with only some clouds remaining Tuesday morning. The increased humidity has resulted in much warmer than normal nights across the region. Heat is expected to rise again by the end of the week.
