SAN BERNARDINO (March 3, 2011) - The internet weather information service WeatherCurrents announces March 3rd an expansion that includes real time online weather information for the city’s downtown.
The new weather station is located at the Carousel Mall studios of radio station KCAA (1050AM) and becomes the 15th in the WeatherCurrents network and the first in San Bernardino County. There are thirteen in Riverside County and one in San Diego County.
"This is really good news," said lead forecaster Mark Moede at the regional office of the National Weather Service. Moede noted that San Bernardino has not had reliable data on a daily basis since a weather station at the former Norton Air Force Base closed in 1994.
“The San Bernardino Airport has only come online in the last few years, and it is only transmitted during the daytime,” said Miguel Miller, coordinator of the San Diego MesoNet at the National Weather Service, which will receive data from WeatherCurrents’ San Bernardino location. “Santa Ana winds, rainfall, and the temperatures representative of the city are only the top reasons of many to have solid consistent data from San Bernardino. More accurate forecasts will result.”
"We'll also be installing new sites in Rubidoux and Corona this year", according to WeatherCurrents creator John Toman. Sites are also being sought in Rancho Cucamonga, Ontario, Colton, Rialto and Fontana.
"The community angle is what makes our weather web sites unique", Toman said. The community-oriented sites offer past weather and climate information, weather news and features. "We rely heavily on online visitors to help define each site, whether it's through local weather observations, photo submissions, or questions and comments," Toman said.
