High Wind Warning in effect Tuesday night into Wednesday

By Reginald Stanley. Posted January 7, 2025, 1:32 AM.

Strong, potentially damaging winds are forecast to impact portions of Southern California late Tuesday into Wednesday as a low pressure system drops south of Nevada. A slight chance of showers may occur over the mountains as well.

North to northeast winds of approximately 30-40 MPH may occur in the inland valleys, with peak gusts reaching as high as 55 MPH. Isolated gusts may be greater. Stronger winds of up to 70 MPH or greater will occur over mountain and foothill areas. Coastal-facing mountain slopes are expected to see the greatest impact of the winds. Significant, although somewhat weaker winds are expected along coastal San Diego County. In addition to the windstorm, fire danger will be critical during this period due to very low humidities, as well as extremely dry fuels and vegetation across Southern California - aggravated by the complete lack of rainfall so far this rainy season. As a result, the National Weather Service has issued a High Wind Warning for the inland valleys (higher risk for inland Orange County), mountains and foothills from 4 PM Tuesday through 6 PM Wednesday.

For areas impacted by particularly strong winds, it is advised to remain in the lower levels of your home, and avoid windows. Watch for falling debris and tree limbs. Exercise caution if you must drive in high winds.
