Storm Totals: November 6th-9th, 2020

By Reginald Stanley. Posted November 9, 2020, 5:12 PM.

A cold low pressure system brought a sharp drop in temperatures, a lot of wind and some rain to the region over the weekend. The mountains received some of their first snow of the season as well.

A deepening marine layer began forming on Friday and was followed by drizzle in some areas later that evening. Showers became more widespread overnight and into Saturday morning, along with lowering snow levels. Intermittent showers continued into Sunday, before the last residual moisture had departed the region early Monday morning. Storm totals reached as high as 1.67 inches in East Highland (courtesy of Peter Michas) and 1.14 inches in nearby Yucaipa (courtesy of Don Kramer), to as low as just 0.05 inches in Riverside (Orangecrest). Nearby Presidential Park had fared slightly better (0.18 inches) with the same total also being recorded in Pinon Hills, in the northern San Gabriel Mountains. Some of the wetter totals in the WeatherCurrents network included 1.01 inches in Anza, 0.77 inches in Fallbrook, 0.76 inches in nearby De Luz, and 0.74 inches in Beaumont (Cherry Valley). Remaining locations recorded storm totals that varied between 0.60 and 0.20 inches. In Temecula Valley's Wine Country, 0.52 inches was recorded through Monday (courtesy of Jim Sappington). Orographic lift appears to have played a role in determining rainfall distribution, with communities in and along mountains and foothills receiving a boost in precipitation, while more easterly locations were windier and somewhat drier.

Snow levels dropped to roughly 5500 feet Saturday. Monday's mostly clear skies offered panoramic views of the recently snowcapped mountains to the north and east of inland Southern California. Drier weather is expected through the middle of the week before another weak trough enters the region on Friday, bringing wind and a chance of light showers through Saturday morning.
