A series of unseasonably strong upper lows over the western USA have been responsible for an unusually cool, damp May to-date across the region, with additional rounds of showers hitting the region Sunday morning and Monday morning.
Showers became widespread inland after midnight Sunday, lasting well into mid-day before activity lessened. An additional cluster of showers, some of them rather heavy although brief, entered the region early Monday morning. Storm totals from May 19th-20th have ranged from 0.11 inches in drier locations such as Pinon Hills, to 0.79 inches in east Hemet. Other locations that received over 1/2 an inch included Beaumont (Cherry Valley), Anza, De Luz, Fallbrook, and Simi Valley. A notable total of 0.78 inches was reported in East Highland (courtesy of Peter Michas). Among drier locations were Perris and Riverside (Presidential Park), where less than 0.20 inches was observed. A total of 0.35 inches was also reported in Temecula Valley's Wine Country (courtesy of Jim Sappington).
Cool, windy, unsettled weather continued into Tuesday and Wednesday, with some light drizzle reported in the Temecula Valley late Tuesday night (no measurable precipitation resulted, however). Strong winds developed over parts of the Inland Empire by Tuesday afternoon, with WeatherCurrents' station in Anza reporting a gust of 47 MPH around 2 PM. Most other WeatherCurrents stations recorded repeated gusts in the 20 MPH range Tuesday.
