The new weather station is located at the home of Brian and Cindy Endres in northwestern Lake Elsinore, just north of the lake itself. "Working with John has been fabulous," said Brian Endres. "I have always wanted a weather station and was always bothered by web sites providing distant weather from some general location like [March Air Reserve Base]. Now, I am able to get the real weather story for my neighborhood."
The Lake Elsinore location follows existing WeatherCurrents locations in Temecula (established in 2000 as TemeculaWeather.com), Murrieta (2003), Hemet, Fallbrook, Menifee/Sun City (2004) and De Luz (2005). The Hemet and De Luz weather stations are owned by local weather enthusiasts who have hooked into the WeatherCurrents network to share their weather observations.
“The Lake Elsinore location is the first WeatherCurrents station to be located north of the Elsinore convergence,” said John Toman, owner and operator of WeatherCurrents.com. “Air streams from the southwest and northwest meet each day just east of Lake Elsinore. The resulting thermals are unique in the area, and provide for good soaring conditions.”
The shearline and thermals of the Elsinore convergence are used for hang gliding and glider aircraft. Much of the soaring activity is based at the Lake Elsinore airport, a few miles south of the new Lake Elsinore weather station.
"I am an avid boater and have been fascinated by weather for as long as I can remember," said Endres, referring to Lake Elsinore's boating facilities. "Growing up in Southern California has really made me appreciate weather extremes since they are a rarity here."
In addition to near-real time weather information, WeatherCurrents’ community-oriented sites offer past weather and climate information, weather news and features. “We rely heavily on our online visitors to help define each site, whether that’s through local weather observations, photo submissions, or questions and comments,” continued Toman. “The community angle is what makes our weather web sites unique.” The combination of community weather features and current weather has increased traffic to WeatherCurrents.com over 100% each year for the past few years, to more than 4,500 page views each day presently.
The National Weather Service will eventually be provided with hourly data from the Lake Elsinore station. “Starting this month, in cooperation with the National Weather Service, we will begin uploading data hourly from our Temecula location into the National Weather Service system,” said Toman. “This will allow their forecasters access to weather conditions in an area in which they have very few resources, and should result in more accurate forecasts for the area. We expect to quickly expand our data sharing to most of our other locations as the NWS requests them, including Lake Elsinore.” Previously the National Weather Service had been following conditions in southwest Riverside County directly from the WeatherCurrents.com web site.
"WeatherCurrents plans to expand our local weather network in the near future to Riverside, Corona, Escondido, Wildomar, French Valley and Anza or Aguanga" said Toman. "We are actively looking for local homes or businesses in the Escondido, Corona, French Valley and Anza/Aguanga communities that might be interested in hosting our weather equipment." Persons in those communities interested in local weather that also have an always-on internet connection should contact WeatherCurrents for additional details.
