Woodpecker Takes Down Fallbrook Weather Feed Tuesday and Wednesday

Posted December 11, 2008, 10:13 AM.

A woodpecker in Fallbrook's Winterwarm neighborhood took down the area's DSL internet access Tuesday and Wednesday, affecting the data stream from the Fallbrook weather station.

According to a report by Bob Gonsett, a woodpecker cut a hole about 1.5" in diameter in the side of a fiber optic splice box, then severed the fiber optic lines that got in the way. The splice box is on the telephone pole at the Winterwarm & Alta Vista intersection. The damage took place around noontime on December 9th.

The woodpecker is also suspected of taking out another fiber optic splice box in the Winterwarm area recently, and causing even more damage at that location.

When internet access was restored Thursday morning, weather data began flowing again. The data accumulated during the outage was also transmitted.

We apologize for the downtime!
