Another round of weekend thunderstorms inland

By Reginald Stanley. Posted July 22, 2013, 8:06 PM.

Another round of monsoonal moisture surged into the inland communities this weekend, producing isolated thunderstorms and heavy rain in some spots.

Thunderstorms began drifting west of the mountains Saturday afternoon, with brief downpours occurring in mostly eastern parts of the inland empire. Thunderstorms became more numerous throughout Sunday, spreading to communities even near the coast.

A particularly severe thunderstorm occurred in Anza between 3 and 4pm Sunday, where the WeatherCurrents station there recorded 1.49" inches. Curtis Croulet, the host of WeatherCurrents' station in Anza, reported Sunday evening "It poured for about an hour, then light rain for awhile. Two bouts of lightning today. The earlier was about 4:30-5:00 AM, the second just before the downpour started this afternoon (around 3 PM). When the heavy rain started this afternoon, the lightning was pretty much finished."

Other rain totals for WeatherCurrents communities and associates since Saturday morning include East Highland with 0.25" (courtesy of Peter Michas), Beaumont (Cherry Valley) with 0.19", Riverside (Canyon Crest) with 0.17", Jurupa Valley and Riverside's Presidential Park with 0.12", Temecula Valley Wine Country with 0.10" (courtesy of Jim Sappington), South Temecula with 0.06", Fallbrook and East Murrieta (courtesy of Reginald Stanley) with 0.04", French Valley and Simi Valley with 0.03", Hemet with 0.02", and 0.01" in Moreno Valley, Northwest Murrieta and San Bernardino.

Residual monsoonal moisture continued as of Monday evening, but was mainly confined to the mountains and deserts. Additional monsoonal moisture is possible Friday, but that event is expected to be much smaller.
