Hemet Bears Brunt of Saturday Thunderstorms (updated)

Posted July 24, 2005, 11:25 AM.

A day of heat, humidity and thunderstorms in the region struck the Hemet area the hardest, where hail, downpours and flooding were reported. Much of the rest of western Riverside and northern San Diego counties escaped measurable rainfall, although showers were reported in Murrieta, Sun City, Menifee and southern De Luz.

In Hemet, hail was reported between 2:30 and 3:30pm Saturday. Hemet's rain total of 0.87" was the highest total for the day. The thunderstorm onslaught dropped temperatures about 20°F in the San Jacinto Valley.

Ten homes at the Four Seasons in Hemet were reported flooded, although the cause wasn't immediately clear. Mark Girard's mother-in-law's home was one of those flooded. "The home is completely flooded and we are taking aggressive water remediation measures," said Girard. "Damage will be in the tens of thousands of dollars."

Flooding at the K. Hovnanains Four Seasons was likely caused by a storm drain clog.

A tornado was also reported in the Hemet area, although no damage was reported, and it was unclear whether or not the funnel cloud touched down. The report came from the intersection of State Routes 74 and 79.

Although WeatherCurrents' weather station in northern De Luz didn't report any rainfall, southern De Luz received rainfall Friday and Saturday, according to a report from Ed and Sharon Puett. Rainfall totals for the area were not available.

In southwestern Riverside County, a swath of showers hit Murrieta. WeatherCurrents' Murrieta station, in northwestern Murrieta, recorded 0.13" Saturday and another 0.13" Sunday morning. In eastern Murrieta, Steven Craig reported 0.16" from yesterday, with a maximum rain rate of 0.47" per hour at one point. Sun City recorded 0.01". Rainfall was not significant enough at other weather stations in Lake Elsinore, Temecula, Riverside and Fallbrook for any recorded precipitation.

Power outages briefly affected the weather feed from some weather stations on Saturday afternoon, including those in Murrieta, Fallbrook and Hemet. Connectivity in all cases was quickly restored.
