An unusually strong trough for this late in the season is responsible for cool, showery weather across the region this week, with all active WeatherCurrents stations having recorded measurable rainfall Thursday morning.
Precipitation amounts ranged from as high as 0.49 inches in Simi Valley to just 0.01 inch in French Valley and San Jacinto. Orographic lift, a feature typically associated with winter storms, was prominent Thursday as foothill locations generally received more rain than other areas, with the eastern valleys faring much drier. Simi Valley, benefiting from its northern location, led Thursday totals with 0.49 inches. A total of 0.29 inches recorded at WeatherCurrents' station in Beaumont (Cherry Valley) was complimented by a total of 0.36 inches reported in nearby East Highland (courtesy of Peter Michas), as well as a total of 0.20 inches reported in nearby Yucaipa (courtesy of Don Kramer). A total of 0.13 inches was also reported in Temecula Valley's Wine Country (courtesy of Jim Sappington). De Luz, Fallbrook, and parts of the Temecula Valley were on the wetter side of the storm. Eastern valleys were drier with totals of less than 0.10 inches in most communities there, where Hemet and San Jacinto recorded totals of 0.02 and 0.01 inches respectively.
Cool, cloudy weather remained across much of the region through Friday, however with shower activity remaining well to the north of the region. Additional, minor chances of rain appear in the forecast again from late Saturday night through Monday.
