The Ides of March Bring a Tempest of Weather (updated, photos)

Posted March 15, 2008, 10:12 PM.

Frozen rain and hail fell quite heavily in areas throughout the San Jacinto Valley Saturday evening, with amounts measuring over 1/2" reported in the Valle Vista area of eastern Hemet.

The 9pm hour brought periods of frozen rain (called grauple) to Valle Vista, lasting about 45 minutes. Photos with this story capture the event.

High winds aloft along with unstable air brought about this weather oddity. Convection carried the unstable air downward.

Snow levels for the storm were at 3,000 feet.

Grauple can be mistaken for snow and hail. Hail is the harder frozen pellets. Grauple is soft ice, made from rain that freezes in transit to the ground. Snow can be distinguished by floating snowflakes.
