Storm Totals: March 3rd-4th, 2021

By Reginald Stanley. Posted March 4, 2021, 2:01 PM.

A Pacific trough with subtropical tap brought varying amounts of rain and mountain snow to the region Wednesday, while thunder was also reported Wednesday afternoon across the region due to instability associated with the storm system.

Northwest flow favored San Diego County for higher precipitation amounts, along with some parts of Orange County and southwestern Riverside County. Areas to the north generally received far less precipitation, while WeatherCurrents' stations in Simi Valley and Pinon Hills both recorded no measurable precipitation at all. Storm totals ranged between 0.72 inches in Murrieta to just 0.08 inches in Moreno Valley, across communities where measurable rain did fall. Murrieta, Fallbrook, French Valley and Temecula all managed to reach or exceed 1/2 inch for the storm through early Thursday morning as residual showers tapered off. In Temecula Valley's Wine Country, a total of 0.42 inches was reported (courtesy of Jim Sappington). Thunder and lightning were numerous across San Diego County throughout Wednesday afternoon as a cluster of thunderstorms moved ashore there. Riverside, the eastern valley communities including Hemet and San Jacinto, as well as Perris and Moreno Valley, were drier overall. In Yucaipa, a total of 0.08 inches was reported (courtesy of Don Kramer) while a similar total of 0.06 inches was reported in nearby East Highland (courtesy of Peter Michas). WeatherCurrents' station in Beaumont (Cherry Valley) was experiencing technical difficulties during the storm. Stations in Lake Elsinore, Riverside (Presidential Park) and Wildomar were still suffering from rain gauge outages.

Mostly clear skies and milder temperatures prevailed by Thursday morning. Additional chances for precipitation are possible next week from Monday night through Thursday, as multiple shortwave troughs move through Southern California. Timing and intensity remain uncertain.
