Labor Day Weekend Heat Wave Rivals Record Heat Last July (corrected)

Posted September 2, 2007, 4:33 PM.

Five consecutive days of scorching temperatures in late August and early September of this year are rivaling the record heat wave of July, 2006, and punctuating an otherwise relatively mild summer season.

On Sunday, September 2nd, temperatures at all ten WeatherCurrents stations were well above 100°F. Riverside was the hottest at 112.8°F, a record for that location, surpassing 111.8°F on July 22nd, 2007. Fallbrook was the coolest at 103.6°F, the warmest of the year at that location.

Riverside's 112.8°F on Sunday was the highest temperature recorded at a WeatherCurrents station this year.

Despite several days of high heat, July 22nd, 2006 remains the hottest day of the decade so far. The hottest temperature ever recorded by WeatherCurrents was 113.5°F on July 22, 2006, at the De Luz weather station. Several stations were in excess of 113°F that day.

In duration, coupled with intensity, however, the current heat wave was close to or hotter than last year's, which lasted four days. This year's major heat wave is already at five days and Labor Day should make it six.

On Saturday, Lake Elsinore and Perris led the way with 110°F, with Riverside and Temecula just behind at 109°F, and Fallbrook the coolest at 98°F.

Before the current heat wave began, Temecula, Fallbrook and De Luz had not recorded any days in excess of 100°F for the year. July and August had been unseasonably mild.

As with last July's record heat, thunderstorms and humidity have been mixed in with the heat. Lake Elsinore registered 0.61" of rainfall on Sunday, two days after a severe storm downed power poles and damaged roofs Friday afternoon in the city.

Thunderstorms also visited San Jacinto, Perris, Sun City and Temecula on Sunday afternoon, and were predicted to be active into the evening. Only trace rainfall fell in Sun City and Temecula. On Saturday, thunderstorm cells hit Hemet. Thursday's storms dropped measurable rain on San Jacinto.

Another sweltering day was predicted for Labor Day before a cooling trend was expected Tuesday. The preponderance of showers and thunderstorms was also predicted to continue for another day.
