Unsettled, cold, wet weather dominated the final days of 2016 in Southern California and into the new year. Several Pacific storms delivered rain and mountain snow to the region.
The first storm arrived late on December 29th and brought rain through the 31st. Rain from the storm averaged between 1/2 an inch and just over 1 inch. On the drier side of the storm was the Temecula Valley, with Lake Elsinore, Wildomar and Murrieta all receiving under 1/2 inch. Temecula was slightly wetter. A total of 0.64 inches was reported in Temecula Valley's Wine Country (courtesy of Jim Sappington). In contrast, Beaumont (Cherry Valley) and the San Jacinto valley had significant rainfall. Beaumont was the wettest location with 1.33 inches reported. Other significant totals were reported in East San Jacinto with 1.29 inches (courtesy of Monty Parrott) and East Highland with 1.18 inches (courtesy of Peter Michas) along with heavy rain on the evening of the 31st.
A second, but much weaker storm followed on New Years Day and quickly departed the region the next day, but left unsettled cloudy weather in its wake. Most rain, if any, fell in the form of drizzle during the early morning hours.
