Update: Cold weekend storm packs over an inch of rain

Posted November 19, 2010, 1:49 PM.

Skies were already overcast on Friday as a deepening marine layer portended a strong Gulf of Alaska storm's later arrival in the region.

The latest predictions for the incoming storm are for two main periods of rain, from Saturday afternoon through evening, and another on Sunday evening. Showers are expected to end on Monday. During the two main bands, rain is predicted to be heavy at times. Gusty winds are expected along with the storm, up to 35 mph in the inland valleys.

Before the main part of the storm arrives, it's possible some light rain or drizzle may be squeezed out of the deep marine layer.

The storm has the potential to bring November rain totals up to or beyond normal. The latest predictions are for between one and three inches of rain, an increase from earlier this morning. According to weather models, a southern trough containing some sub-tropical moisture will be absorbed into the system sometime today, and will enhance rain and snow totals.

The National Weather Service has forecast mountain snow down to below 5,000 feet by Sunday night. They'll start near 7,000 feet on Saturday. Accumulations of 6 to 10 inches of snow were predicted near the mountain resorts.

The last major storm was on October 19th, with rain totals exceeding two inches in spots.
