Thunderstorms, gusty winds hit inland communities Sunday afternoon

By Reginald Stanley. Posted September 8, 2024, 11:06 PM.

Thunderstorm activity increased on Sunday compared to Saturday over the region, with activity further west than usual and affecting the inland valleys.

In the valleys, scattered thunderstorm activity produced damaging winds, localized flash floods and even hail in some locations. In the areas affected, thunder and lightning were frequent. In the WeatherCurrents network, south Temecula received the most rain on Sunday with 0.39 inches recorded there. East Hemet followed with 0.12 inches, while northwest Murrieta recorded 0.07 inches. Moreno Valley recorded 0.05 inches, and Pinon Hills received 0.02 inches. Other WeatherCurrents stations did not record measurable rainfall on Sunday, although Lake Elsinore was knocked offline during the evening, likely caused by a thunderstorm in the area. In Temecula Valley's Wine Country, 0.18 inches was reported (courtesy of Jim Sappington).

Thunderstorms tapered off into the evening across the region. Monsoonal moisture is forecast to decrease on Monday, as an incoming trough brings cooler temperatures and a return of the marine layer to the region for the remainder of the week.
