A Pacific storm associated with an atmospheric river event brought widespread rain to California over Tuesday and Wednesday this week.

While northern and central portions of California received modestly high precipitation totals, similarly anticipated wet totals for Southern California failed to materialize as the moisture tap rapidly weakened south of Point Conception - resulting in storm totals largely ending up around half or less than half of original predictions for much of Southern California. North of Los Angeles, most of the rain fell on Tuesday only, while rain arrived later Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning for the rest of Southern California, clearing out quickly to the east during the early morning hours. Storm totals across the WeatherCurrents network averaged between 0.3 and 0.6 inches. Fallbrook recorded the wettest total with 0.63 inches, while Perris was on the opposite end with 0.30 inches recorded there. In Temecula Valley's Wine Country, 0.54 inches was reported (courtesy of Jim Sappington), while in East Highland, a total of 0.24 inches was reported (courtesy of Peter Michas). A total of 0.35 inches was reported in Yucaipa (courtesy of Don Kramer). WeatherCurrents' rain gauges in Moreno Valley and Riverside (Orangecrest) remained unavailable during the storm.

Cold, cloudy weather remained in place Thursday with patchy drizzle even falling in some areas at points throughout the day as yet another storm took aim at the region. A cold front, with the potential to bring heavy rainfall to the region, is on track to impact Southern California on Saturday (New Years Day) and early Sunday. The first week of the new year is forecast to be a potentially wet one, with multiple disturbances bring chances of showers (although none as strong as the upcoming weekend storm) through most of next week.
