January 22nd storm totals; Short-term outlook

By Reginald Stanley. Posted January 27, 2026, 9:52 PM.

Last week, a cutoff low pressure system brought unsettled weather and spotty precipitation to the region, with most rain activity occurring on Thursday, January 22nd.

Precipitation associated with the storm was not particularly bountiful nor widespread. Scattered showers occurred overnight Thursday into Friday morning, while weather remained unsettled (but mostly dry) through Saturday afternoon. Where rain did fall, storm totals were mostly under 0.1 inch, with the exception of Pinon Hills to the north, where 0.19 inches fell. Totals of 0.06 inches were also reported in both Riverside's Canyon Crest neighborhood (courtesy of Jim Ness) as well as Temecula Valley's Wine Country (courtesy of Jim Sappington). In the WeatherCurrents network, the eastern valleys were largely dry during this storm, with no measurable precipitation being recorded in areas such as Hemet, San Jacinto and Anza.

Cloud cover quickly began to clear out Saturday evening ahead of dry northeasterly Santa Ana winds, continuing into Sunday morning. Very dry, periodic offshore winds have been in place since Sunday, before temperatures warm up later this week. High temperatures could rise to as much as 10 to 15 degrees above-average for the inland valleys during Friday-Saturday. A cooling trend looks to take place early next week, with the possibility of a dry inside-slider system affecting the region.
