Unseasonably deep trough brings scattered showers to region

By Reginald Stanley. Posted June 29, 2020, 11:26 PM.

A trough of low pressure near the West Coast has brought mild temperatures, mostly cloudy skies and scattered showers - a rarity for June - to the region early this week.

Drizzle began falling shortly before midnight on Monday across some parts of the Inland Empire, while measurable precipitation was recorded at seven WeatherCurrents stations by Monday evening. At most WeatherCurrents stations, it was the first recorded instance of rain on June 29th of any year. Where rain did fall, totals were generally under 1/10 inch, ranging from as high as 0.11 inches in Falbrook to 0.01 inch in Lake Elsinore. Inland, primarily the Temecula Valley as well as the Santa Ana Mountains were affected. Light rain continued in southwestern Riverside County well into mid-morning in communities like Murrieta.

Gradual warming under building high pressure is forecast to replace the trough this week, as well as the addition of some minor mid-level moisture affecting the mountains and deserts late in the week. Stronger onshore flow, caused by additional troughs could potentially bring a return to mild weather again next week.

Here are the rain totals for the WeatherCurrents network and associates:
