Storm Totals: February 12th, 2021

By Reginald Stanley. Posted February 18, 2021, 10:53 PM.

A weak low pressure system brought cool temperatures, gusty winds and sporadic light showers to the region during the AM hours of February 12, producing mostly light precipitation totals before departing the region to the southeast.

While rain totals from February 12 were mostly under 1/10 inch across the region, several notable exceptions included WeatherCurrents' stations in Beaumont (Cherry Valley) as well as in east Hemet, where totals of 0.43 inches and 0.28 inches were recorded respectively. Lightning was reported in Hemet on February 12. In East Highland, a total of 0.51 inches was reported (courtesy of Peter Michas), while a similarly high total of 0.47 inches was also reported in nearby Yucaipa (courtesy of Don Kramer). Elsewhere, only WeatherCurrents' stations in the typically wet communities of De Luz and Fallbrook both managed to exceed 0.10 inches Friday. In Temecula Valley's Wine Country, 0.04 inches was reported (courtesy of Jim Sappington), matching totals recorded in nearby South Temecula as well as central Murrieta. Only WeatherCurrents' station in Simi Valley did not record any measurable rainfall. Stations in Lake Elsinore and Riverside (Presidential Park) were still experiencing rain gauge problems, producing unreliable totals there.

Several additional, weak shortwave troughs brought drizzle and a deep marine layer on February 14 as well as February 16, adding only very light amounts of precipitation in communities where measurable rain did fall. These events were once again followed by a return to a predominantly dry weather pattern over the southwestern United States, with cool Santa Ana Winds in full effect by Thursday. Season totals continue to lag increasingly further below average for this time of year, with no significant pattern changes in the forecast for the time being.
