Storms brewing: second half of week to be wet and cold

Posted February 13, 2011, 10:22 PM.

Following a dry spell that's lasted most of the last month and a half, the pattern is changing and two storms are aiming for Southern California's inland valleys.

The return of onshore flow is expected first, on Monday. Humidity and clouds will both get boosts during the day and again on Tuesday.

Rain is possible by Tuesday night and likely by Wednesday morning. The first cold front, arriving Wednesday night, will have a subtropical tap leading in, meaning Wednesday afternoon and evening could be quite wet.

Snow levels are predicted to fall quite low after the main front passes. Sunday's weather model runs showed levels under 3,500 feet possible by Thursday.

Periods of showers will follow the passing of the cold front, then a second, possibly stronger front is predicted for Saturday night and Sunday.

The latest forecasts are for two to five inches of rain between Tuesday and Sunday.

More storms are possible the following week.

The storm track has been far to the north for quite a while, except for one system that made it through on January 30th. A upper-level ridge in the central Pacific has been keeping the moisture away.
