Pala Road's Rebuilt Roadbed Damaged

Posted February 22, 2005, 6:40 AM.

Extensive damage to Pala Road from an overflowing Pechanga creek near Great Oak high school south of Temecula forced its closure only a few weeks after a complete washout of over 100 feet of roadway and a hurried reconstruction effort. A reopening date was unknown as of Tuesday morning.

On Sunday, water had risen high enough to erode some of the dirt fill beneath the new roadway and had compromised it in several places. "There were eroded fissures on either side of the road," said Sue Bram, a local resident, "and by Sunday afternoon they had widened and there was at least one more." Residents of the area south of Temecula were landlocked Monday and Tuesday.

Road crews were working on the scene Monday removing or moving chunks of the new roadway.

The Pechanga Fire Department was standing by at the scene. As of Tuesday morning no one was being let across the road section. They were unsure when pedestrians or vehicles would be let through the area again.
