Rare June rainfall makes for a wet morning

Posted June 6, 2011, 11:51 AM.

It's been about two years since the last June storm.

Although a low pressure system was mainly to the north, scattered showers brought some significant rainfall to Southern California's inland valleys on Monday morning.

As of noontime, Temecula recorded 0.12", Fallbrook had 0.10", De Luz and Hemet received 0.04", Murrieta registered 0.03", and Wildomar and Lake Elsinore had 0.02".

The Temecula Valley Wine Country also received 0.12" of rainfall (thanks Jim Sappington).

No measurable rainfall fell at WeatherCurrents stations in Riverside, Moreno Valley, Perris, San Bernardino, French Valley, or Beaumont.

Most of the rain fell between 1am and 3am this morning. Lingering showers are a possibility into Monday afternoon.

Rainfall was much heavier to north. Starting in the Santa Barbara area and moving up the Central California coast, rainfall totals were between 1" and 5".

The last round of light June showers was on June 3rd, 2009. Temecula recorded 0.15" that day, Murrieta and Hemet 0.03", and several other communities 0.01". Beyond that, there were other instances of significant June rainfall over the last decade, although Hemet also had 0.03" on June 11, 2005.

June is normally one of the two driest months of the year (July is the other).
