Below normal temperatures poised to continue for at least another week

Posted June 20, 2010, 3:19 PM.

Continuing a year-to-date trend, most inland valley temperatures in the first half of June were lower than normal. And, based on predictions from the National Weather Service and Climate Prediction Center, summer heat will continue to be delayed, at least for another week or so.

Based on maximum temperatures, Temecula was running three degrees below normal in June to date (80°F versus a normal 83°F). Fallbrook and De Luz were three degrees below normal (76°F versus 79°F). Murrieta was four degrees below normal (79°F against 83°F).

Riverside was the furthest away from normal, off five degrees from a normal of 87°F.

Lake Elsinore's high temperatures were two degrees below normal (89°F versus 91°F). Menifee was three degrees off normal (86°F against 89°F).

Hemet was an exception, with temperatures right near normal (88°F versus 87°F). Nearby, San Jacinto was two degrees below a normal high of 86°F.

Stations in Moreno Valley, Perris, Wildomar and French Valley were too new for accurate comparisons.

Longer term predictions for the summer months are either normal or above normal. The Climate Prediction Center's one month outlook, published June 17th, was for a normal July, and the three month outlook called for a 33% chance of above normal temperatures in the inland valleys.

In most inland valley locations, July is the hottest month of the year. Average high temperatures range from 86°F in Fallbrook to a smoking 100°F in Lake Elsinore.
