Thursday Evening Fire Update - North San Diego and Western Riverside Counties

Posted October 25, 2007, 9:16 PM.

As of Thursday evening, most Fallbrook residents were being allowed to return to their homes. The East Mission Road exit off of Interstate 15 remained closed, however, and the burn areas also remained closed. See the separate news story for a description of the places opened for residents to return.

Favorable weather, with more humid onshore flow, generally allowed increased containment for many of the local fires. Air quality continued to be poor with smoke and falling ash in many areas. Conditions were expected to slowly improve through the upcoming weekend.

The Rice Canyon Fire was reported at 9,000 acres. No additional structures have been destroyed, and containment had increased to 40%. The number of firefighters working on the fire had increased to 1,073 Thursday, and three of them have been injured. The cause of the fire was confirmed today to have been a downed power line.

Some areas of Fallbrook and Bonsall, covered by the Rainbow Municipal Water District, were being told to boil their water until further notice.

The Poomacha Fire increased in size today to 38,500 acres. It was at 30% containment on Thursday evening. 60 homes have been destroyed in the fire, according to Cal Fire. 1,406 firefighters are assigned, a significant surge from a day ago. Valley Center has been added to the list of communities threatened by the fire.

The Horno/Ammo on Camp Pendleton had expanded to 17,000 acres, and was 50% contained on Thursday evening.

In the San Bernardino Mountains, the Slide Fire was only 15% contained at 11,675 acres burned, and the Grass Valley Fire was 70% contained at 1,110 acres burned.

There was a small, five acre fire in Wildomar Wednesday that was quickly contained.

No additional new fires have been reported. Smoke was heavy across Western Riverside and North San Diego counties on Thursday, and most schools announced they would be closed Friday, again for poor air quality.

None of Riverside County is under any immediate threat from any of the fires.
