Heavy rain hits Inland communities Wednesday afternoon

By Reginald Stanley. Posted May 22, 2019, 6:28 PM.

A surge of particularly heavy rain impacted much of the Inland Empire throughout Wednesday afternoon, as convection developed over Orange County, southwestern San Bernardino and western Riverside Counties.

Isolated thunderstorms, pea-sized hail, and orographics of the Elsinore Convergence Zone have been emboldened by the development of convective activity over the region Wednesday afternoon. Preliminary storm totals have ranged between 0.20 inches and 2/3 of an inch in the affected areas, with WeatherCurrents' station in San Jacinto currently yielding the highest total of 0.59 inches. Pea-sized hail was reported in Yucaipa, Beaumont and Moreno Valley. Minor street flooding has been reported in the Temecula Valley and parts of the eastern valleys. The heavy rain appeared to be dissipating over the region after 6 PM Wednesday evening, however additional showers remain possible through Thursday morning.

Unusually cold daytime temperatures for late May have been prevalent across the Inland Empire this afternoon, primarily in the lower 50s and upper 40s, which is more typical of a winter storm in January or February than late May. As a result, snow levels down to 6,000 feet above sea level have been observed by the National Weather Service.
