Second Earthquake This Week Jolts Region - Centered Near Yucaipa

Posted June 16, 2005, 2:02 PM.

The second earthquake this week struck at 1:53 Thursday afternoon near Yucaipa in San Bernardino County. An initial measurement for the quake was 5.3 on the richter scale, which was later revised to 4.9. There were no immediate reports of damage.

The moderate earthquake was felt throughout the region, from Orange County and Los Angeles, the Inland Empire, San Diego, and into the deserts. Yucaipa is east of the city of San Bernardino on the Interstate 10 freeway, and is just across the Riverside/San Bernardino county line.

Technical details of Thursday's earthquake are at the USGS web site.

Unlike the 5.2 earthquake this past Sunday (downgraded from 5.6 initially), this one was nearer to the San Andreas fault, which runs through the San Bernardino mountains. Sunday's quake occurred near Anza, east of Temecula, on the San Jacinto fault which runs parallel to the San Andreas fault. Only minor damage was reported.

Multiple aftershocks to the Yucaipa quake have already been reported, including 3.7 and 3.5 magnitude aftershocks within two minutes of the main quake.

Hundreds of small aftershocks followed Sunday's Anza quake as well, including a 2.4 magnitude aftershock minutes after Thursday's Yucaipa quake.
