Add hail to the mix; frosty night ahead; snow levels may fall to 1,000 feet tonight

Posted February 26, 2011, 3:47 PM.

There have been several reports of hail and graupel on this chilly Saturday in the inland valleys, but little measurable rainfall this afternoon.

Hail was reported in Moreno Valley in the noon hour, and it was followed by more at 1:14pm through 1:20pm in the city of San Jacinto, and in the 2pm hour in southeast Temecula, graupel in the Redlands area, in the 3pm hour in Valley Center, in north San Diego County, and around 4:10pm in Fallbrook and Temecula for several minutes.

In each case, hail or graupel fell for only a few minutes. The reports were given by National Weather Service trained spotters, and by the San Jacinto weather center. Fallbrook's hail was reported by the Fallbrook Fire Department, and also by M. Dohrman, who spotted some in north Fallbrook at Hillcrest Lane and Stage Coach Lane.

Graupel is a soft form of hail that is sometimes mistaken for snow.

Earlier this morning something like sleet fell in Temecula at the Promenade Mall, in the 11am hour.

Frost is expected across the inland valleys tonight, except in the Fallbrook area, after the remnants of the storm leaves the region. Snow levels could fall as low as 1,000 feet tonight, according to the latest National Weather Service forecasts, and any scattered showers or thunderstorms could also produce light snowfall in portions of the inland valleys.
