Trough results in unsettled weather Tuesday, scattered showers

By Reginald Stanley. Posted April 16, 2019, 10:44 PM.

A weak shortwave trough brought cool, cloudy weather to the region Tuesday, offering a brief break from a rather dry, mild Spring so far.

Isolated showers began emerging over the region early Tuesday morning, continuing throughout the day at sporadic intervals. Only three WeatherCurrents stations recorded measurable rainfall Tuesday. French Valley recorded the highest total when a short but heavy shower affected the area Tuesday afternoon, with a total of 0.08 inches there. De Luz and Hemet also recorded small amounts of 0.01 inch each. In East Highland, a total of 0.02 inches was reported Tuesday (courtesy of Peter Michas).

As with other disturbances since mid-March, very little precipitation was observed across the region. The last significant storm to affect the region on a widespread level occurred on March 7. Despite a dry Spring thus far, season totals remain well above average for the 2018-19 water year, largely thanks to a very wet February. Significant wildflower blooms have been observed across Southern California since March, along with widespread green, lush landscapes. Such activity was virtually non-existent during this time in 2018, following a very dry 2017-18 season.

High pressure was expected to rebuild in the following days, warming temperatures through Friday before weak low pressure brings cooler weather again. No additional precipitation is currently forecast beyond early Wednesday morning.
