Holy Fire scorches 6,200 acres near Lake Elsinore and Corona

By Reginald Stanley. Posted August 8, 2018, 7:09 PM.

The wildfire burning in the Cleveland National Forest near Lake Elsinore and Corona, which has been named the Holy Fire, has burned approximately 6,200 acres of wildland as of Wednesday afternoon.

The fire, suspected to be arson, was first reported on Monday. As of Wednesday, it was only 5 percent contained, with twelve structures destroyed. Hot, dry conditions and the remote location of the fire have hindered firefighting efforts. Mandatory evacuations are in effect for the Holy Jim Canyon, Trabuco Canyon, Horsethief Canyon, McVicker, Rice, El Cariso, Glen Eden, Sycamore Creek, and Rancho Capistrano areas, as well as the Falcon and Blue Jay campgrounds. Voluntary evacuations are also in effect for all of the Ortega Highway west of the Lookout Restaurant near Lake Elsinore to the Nichols Institute in Orange County, as well as all connecting roads and campgrounds.

At this time, no major injuries have been reported. Smoke from the fire has darkened the skies across the Temecula Valley, part of the Inland Empire as well as Orange County.
