Near Triple-Digit Temperatures Scorch Inland Areas

Posted May 22, 2005, 11:31 AM.

A hot weekend continued Sunday after near-record temperatures in northern San Diego and western Riverside counties Friday and Saturday. Strong high pressure stifled onshore flow and brought conditions akin to the middle of the summer in some areas.

Of WeatherCurrents' seven weather stations, Lake Elsinore recorded the highest temperature Saturday, at 98°F. The Menifee Valley station, located just inside Sun City, closely followed at 97°F Saturday and Sunday. Eastern Hemet recorded 95°F, Temecula 93°F and Murrieta 92°F. Fallbrook and De Luz were the coolest at 90°F.

May heat is nothing unusual, although a more normal weather pattern involves early marine layer influence. Still, yesterday's 93°F in Temecula was not a record; 100°F was recorded May 21, 2000, and 96°F was recorded on May 21, 2003. An infamous heat wave in early May last year led to wildfires in Southern California, including the Eagle Fire near Temecula and the Cerrito Fire north of Lake Elsinore.

All areas were expected to be slightly hotter on Sunday before a cooling trend was predicted to bring temperatures gradually down next week.
