May 2020 ends as it began: Warm, dry

By Reginald Stanley. Posted June 1, 2020, 7:43 PM.

Continuing a significant warming trend that began in late April in the region, May 2020 was one of the warmest in at least 20 years in the Inland Empire.

In Temecula, where records date back to 1999, May 2020 was the second-warmest May on record, behind May 2014. Other WeatherCurrents stations recorded abnormally warm Mays this year as well, including both Murrieta and Hemet (where records date back to 2003). A number of WeatherCurrents stations also recorded little or no measurable precipitation during the month, with the exceptions of Simi Valley, Beaumont (Cherry Valley), De Luz, Fallbrook, Anza, San Jacinto, and French Valley. High pressure, unusually strong at times, persisted through much of the month throughout the region.

A trough of low pressure along the West Coast may bring a slight chance of showers on Friday. June is on average one of the driest months of the year in the region, and any measurable precipitation in the month is very rare. In contrast to the heat the region experienced in May, June looks to start off with a more typical Spring pattern, with June Gloom in the forecast after next weekend.
