Three powerful storms set to bring heavy rain this weekend

By Reginald Stanley. Posted January 18, 2017, 5:13 PM.

Three very wet storms are forecast to hit the region beginning Wednesday night, with high chances of rain all the way through Monday. Thunderstorms are also possible.

Between three and six inches of rain are predicted for the valleys through Monday. Two to five inches is predicted for the coasts, and six to twelve inches in the mountains. High deserts could see one to three inches, and the low deserts may see between 0.75 inches and 1.5 inches. Each storm will be progressively colder than the last, with snow levels for each storm predicted to be down to 5,000 feet, 4,000 feet, and 3,500 feet consecutively. Heavy snow is expected above 7,000 feet. The rain is expected to produce flooding and debris flows. The storms could be the wettest series of storms since December 2010, one of the wettest months on record.

A strong jet stream is responsible for the wet weather, and is expected to weaken on Tuesday, allowing for a drying-out period.
