Wednesday Thunderstorms Lead to Showers in Moreno Valley and Hemet

Posted September 3, 2009, 6:01 AM.

Some eastern inland valleys received their first measurable dose of thunderstorms for this summer on Wednesday afternoon.

In Moreno Valley, 0.14" of rainfall was recorded, mostly in the 3pm hour.

The Valle Vista area of Hemet got 0.10", also in the 3pm hour.

Other areas recording rainfall were the Cranston fire station in Valley Vista, with 0.02", and Keenwild, up in the San Jacinto mountains, with 0.70".

Gusty winds, dust and debris accompanied the thunderstorm in the San Jacinto Valley, according to Monty Parrot of San Jacinto. Brief power outtages along with numerous broken branches and several toppled trees have also been reported as gusts over 50mph were recorded with sustained winds well over 30mph for the better part of an hour in some areas of Valle Vista.

Some unusually gusty winds had also occurred early Tuesday morning in the Temecula Valley wine country, according to David Bradley of California Dreamin'. That was likely associated with a thunderstorm front over the deserts.

Thunderstorm potential was predicted to continue Thursday and Friday, and perhaps Saturday, with chances decreasing each day. Areas with good rainfall potential for Thursday included the Moreno, Perris and San Jacinto valleys. Mid-level moisture was expected to be cleared out by a low pressure system over the weekend.
