Santa Ana Winds hit region Friday

By Reginald Stanley. Posted December 4, 2016, 10:43 AM.

A rather ferocious round of the notorious Santa Ana Winds swept through the region on Friday, causing minor damage, kicking up dust and affecting overnight temperatures.

The winds arrived late Wednesday night, immediately bringing up temperatures and lowering humidities. Sustained winds of between 20mph and 40mph were observed in many Inland communities. This Santa Ana Wind event however was not a particularly warm one, like those the region often sees between September and November. Daytime temperatures mostly stayed in the 60s. Due to the recent rains and cool temperatures, fire danger was not very high. The winds lasted into early Saturday morning before tapering down.

Minor damage was caused by the winds in some parts of the region, including downed trees, big rigs, and blowing debris/dust. Gusts of up to 50mph were reported in Rancho Cucamonga. Winds were strongest in the mountains and canyons, as is typical for Santa Ana Wind episodes.
