Beat the heat, check the backseat

Posted June 21, 2011, 8:28 PM.

Five children tragically died after being left in hot cars in just the past week, according to the Department of Geosciences, San Francisco State University, bringing this year's total in the United States to fifteen.

Heat is the number one weather-related killer in the United States, according to the National Weather Service, and children, adults and pets left in parked vehicles are at great risk.

In 2010, 49 children died in hot cars.

WeatherCurrents is partnering with Golden Gate Weather and the National Weather Service this summer to get the message out about juvenile vehicular hyperthermia (heat stroke).

It doesn't take much to heat up the insides of a car. "The atmosphere and the windows of a car are relatively 'transparent' to the sun's shortwave radiation and are warmed little. However this shortwave energy does heat objects that it strikes. For example, a dark dashboard or seat can easily reach temperatures in the range of 180 to over 200 degrees F," according to the National Weather Service.
