Saturday was the coolest July day in over 20 years inland

By Reginald Stanley. Posted July 20, 2015, 4:02 PM.

Saturday, July 18th, was a muggy day with temperatures dampened by thunderstorms and persistent showers.

High temperatures at WeatherCurrents stations ranged between 70 and 80 degrees Saturday, which is rather cool for any day in July inland. Due to the rain, cloud cover and humidity, temperatures hardly strayed from the highs overnight either. Thunderstorms are not completely unusual for July inland, however on nearly all occasions, temperatures are much higher.

According to records from Downtown Los Angeles, Riverside (UCR), and Escondido - temperatures as cool as they were on Saturday have not been observed in any July since 1991 in inland Southern California (coastlines are exempt due to strong marine layer influence). Temperatures that summer were greatly affected by the June eruption of Mount Pinatubo in Indonesia, cooling summer temperatures over North America in 1991. WeatherCurrents was not yet active during that time.

Average temperatures for the month of July 2015 so far have been running from average to slightly below average, largely due to a mild spell during the first two weeks of the month.
