Backwards Spring this year

By Reginald Stanley. Posted June 1, 2015, 8:16 PM.

Throughout the majority of WeatherCurrents stations and elsewhere in Southern California, Spring 2015 has followed a backwards trend starting with an extraordinarily warm March, and each month since being cooler than the previous month.

Out of the currently twenty active WeatherCurrents stations, twelve of them reported a cool April and even cooler Mays this year. The largest difference in average monthly temperatures during the March-May period this year was observed in Beaumont (Cherry Valley), where the average temperature for March was 64.2 degrees, then dropped nearly five degrees to 59.5 in April, then dropped further in May to 56.9 degrees - a drop of 7.3 degrees from March to May. All other stations which observed the backwards temperature pattern this Spring recorded temperature drops under five degrees from March to May.

Anza and Hemet recorded Aprils that were cooler than March, but warmer Mays. Lake Elsinore recorded the same average temperature for April and May, which were both cooler than March there. Wildomar was the only station to have the unique report of a warm April and warmer May - a normal Spring pattern. The French Valley, Murrieta, Riverside (Canyon Crest), and San Jacinto stations had incomplete data for the March-May period and were thus uncounted.

The unusual climate pattern this Spring may be attributed to a mostly dry March and April, where high pressure produced unusually warm temperatures and out-of-season offshore winds over the region. May was different in that constant late-season storms, along with a persistent marine layer held temperatures down below normal for most of the month.

The climate outlook for June 2015 has a 40 percent chance of ending up warmer than normal, according to the Climate Prediction Center. Marine layer will keep temperatures fairly mild this week, and possibly even a slight chance of showers Friday and Saturday.
