Hot, Dry Week Expected to Greet Autumn's Beginning

Posted September 20, 2009, 10:17 PM.

Santa Ana winds are one the curses of fall in Southern California, and the first event of the season is expected Tuesday through Thursday.

Temperatures in the inland valleys will top 100°F and may be as much as 110°F in some locations. Humidities will be dry, with dewpoints only in the 20's.

Fortunately, the winds aren't predicted to be very strong, and may save the region from extreme fire danger, although the fire danger will still be high. Wind prone areas should get gusts to 35 mph, according to the most recent NWS forecast.

Wildfires have already burned in the Santa Ana and San Jacinto mountains, the Camp Pendleton area, and in the brush east of Temecula this summer. The vegetation is very dry from a general lack of rainfall dating back to March.

Autumn officially begins Tuesday at 2:18pm.

After Thursday, temperatures are anticipated to decline into the weekend. Humidities should climb as well. A full reversal of offshore flow isn't expected until the following Monday.
