Rainbow fire snarls Friday afternoon traffic

A small fire in the Rainbow area, south of Temecula and east of Fallbrook, snarled traffic on Interstate 15 and brought out helicopters and fire-bombers on Friday afternoon. The fire started as a vehicle fire near the border control checkpoint at the county line, and spread into vegetation, according to a report from the Riverside County Fire Department. It was reported at 3:52 pm. The spread through brush was slow, and firefighters from CAL FIRE Riverside, CAL FIRE San Diego, Riverside County Fire, North County Fire, Pala Fire, and Pechanga Fire all assisted in containing the fire at five acres. According to an SWRNN story, traffic was backed up for miles in both directions on Interstate 15 during Friday's rush hour. The fire was declared 100% contained at 8:05pm Friday night, and full control was estimated by noon Saturday. |
