Storm Totals: January 9th-11th, 2017 (updated)

By Reginald Stanley. Posted January 12, 2017, 9:48 PM.

The jet stream has directed numerous consecutive Pacific storms towards Southern California this week, leading to occasionally heavy rain, mountain snow, and flooding across the region.

The first storm brought morning rain to the region Monday morning, with residual showers tapering off later that day as the storm departed. Showers did continue in some communities into Tuesday, however amounts were light at best. Rain totals for that storm average between four tenths of an inch to about 3/4 of an inch. A second, weaker storm brought additional rain to the region on Wednesday. However, localized heavy rain was reported in some communities. Communities such as Simi Valley, De Luz, Fallbrook, San Bernardino, and Beaumont (Cherry Valley) accumulated rain from Wednesday's storm that was roughly equal to (and in some cases, greater than) those locations' respective totals from the preceding storm. De Luz was the first WeatherCurrents station to break the 10 inch mark on Wednesday, for the 2016-17 water year. On Thursday, both WeatherCurrents stations at San Bernardino and Beaumont (Cherry Valley) followed suit.

Significant rain was reported by our WeatherCurrents contributors as well. In East Highland, an accumulated total of 1.09 inches was reported (courtesy of Peter Michas). In East San Jacinto, 0.58 inches was reported between Monday and Wednesday (courtesy of Monty Parrott). 0.48 inches was reported in Temecula Valley Wine Country (courtesy of Jim Sappington).

Storm totals from Monday's and Wednesday's storms were combined in this article. Simi Valley recorded the greatest combined total - 1.33 inches. San Bernardino and Lake Elsinore also recorded modest combined totals, with 1.23 inches and 1.00 inches respectively. In contrast, WeatherCurrents stations in San Jacinto and San Diego (City Heights) recorded relatively dry 0.32 and 0.30 inch combined totals, respectively. A separate story will be published for Thursday's storm after it departs and totals are gathered.
