Wednesday Evening Fire Update - North San Diego and Riverside Counties

Posted October 24, 2007, 8:27 PM.

Containment levels on all fires in Southern California increased Wednesday as the Santa Ana winds faded, but many fires remained dangerously out of control, especially in San Diego County.

In Riverside County, the Rosa Fire, west of Temecula, in the eastern De Luz area, is 100% contained at 411 acres burned.

The Poomacha Fire had burned 35,000 acres as of Wednesday night. It has not joined the Witch Fire, as had been previously reported. A report said 65 houses had been destroyed in the Rincon Reservation near Pauma Valley, but the casino was intact. Pauma Reservation, along Highway 76, was reportedly threatened in the afternoon hours. Many houses up South Grade Road to Palomar Mountain have reportedly been destroyed. The fire was only 10% contained in the evening hours.

The Rice Canyon Fire was up to 9,000 acres burned and was only 20% contained Wednesday evening. 1,100 firefighters were on the scene. The number of structures destroyed remained constant at 206 homes and two commercial properties.

The Ammo Fire on Camp Pendleton had burned 10,000 acres and was 30-40% contained Wednesday evening. Interstate 5 was closed again between Highway 76 and San Onofre.

The area of De Luz evacuated this morning is the portion in San Diego County. No evacuations have been issued for Riverside County. Five evacuation centers in Temecula and Murrieta are holding people who have fled from the fire. Among the centers are the Pechanga Casino, gyms at Temecula Valley, Chaparral and Vista Murrieta high schools, and the Community Recreation Center at the Ronald Reagan sports park. Over 1,500 people are being housed.

A false alarm was apparently given this morning to some residents of the Redhawk area in Temecula to evacuate. Some panic spread through the community Wednesday due to a lot of smoke spilling into the valley as the wind shifted direction to onshore flow.

A town hall meeting was held in Temecula this evening at 6pm. Over 2,000 people attended and heard preparedness updates from the Riverside County Fire Chief, the Temecula Fire Chief, County Supervisor Jeff Stone, Mayor Washington and Mayor Pro-Tem Naggar. They stressed that the Temecula area in particular, and Riverside County in general, was under no immediate threat from the fires still burning.

Schools in the Temecula Valley will be closed Thursday due to poor air quality from the smoke.
