Rain overnight is heavy; showers, thunderstorms and snow potential for the rest of Saturday

Posted February 26, 2011, 12:17 PM.

The cold front of an arctic storm has moved east, leaving heavy rainfall of an inch to two inches or more in the inland valleys, and snow of up to two feet in the local mountains.

There was a report of some snowfall this morning in Perris, at the 1,300 foot elevation, and another report had a mixture of sleet and rain falling at the Promenade Mall in Temecula in the 11am hour.

Snow was also visible from the Temecula Valley on the foothills above the Rainbow Gap to the south.

At noontime today, De Luz had recorded 2.37", leading the 15 WeatherCurrents stations. Murrieta was next at 1.80". Other high totals included Beaumont (1.65"), Temecula (1.60"), San Bernardino (1.49"), Fallbrook and Lake Elsinore (1.44"), Wildomar (1.40"), Hemet (1.37"), French Valley (1.32").

Moreno Valley registered the least at 0.90". Other lower totals included Riverside (0.94"), Menifee (1.19"), San Jacinto (1.21") and Perris (1.22").

Jim Sappington reported 1.55" by this morning in the Temecula Valley Wine Country, and East San Jacinto received 1.61" of rain (measured by Monty Parrott).

"Snow levels are a third of the way down from North Mountain and just above the Soboba Indian reservation," said Monty, referring to the San Jacinto Mountains.

Snow was reported down the 2,400 foot level in the pass area, affecting Cherry Valley and Beaumont.

There were few reports of problems despite the heavy rain and snow.

Showers and a chance of thunderstorms were expected for the rest of Saturday, with a very cold night ahead. The latest forecasts called for snow levels to fall to 2,000 feet tonight, which would put light snow on the foothills, in the pass area, and in some of the higher portions of the inland valleys.

Additional precipitation could be another quarter of inch or so through tonight.
