Saturday afternoon yields another wave of thunderstorms

By Reginald Stanley. Posted September 8, 2013, 12:21 PM.

In what has become a typical pattern recently for inland residents, thunderstorms marched west of the mountains Saturday afternoon, causing flooding in some areas.

In the WeatherCurrents network, the Hemet station was hit hardest this time around, with 0.48" recorded there Saturday afternoon. 0.08" was recorded by Monty Parrott in nearby East San Jacinto. Perris recorded a light amount of 0.01". Multiple thunderstorm cells formed in the eastern valleys and along the Elsinore Convergence Zone, including one cell that just barely missed our Lake Elsinore station, where only sprinkles fell. A strong cell dumped heavy rain and hail over northwestern Lake Elsinore and Alberhill for about an hour, causing flooding. To the south, Wildomar recorded 0.13" inches of rain. Rain totals for Murrieta were not available due to a station outage there. Further east of the Temecula Valley, Anza recorded 0.04". To the north, 0.10" fell in Beaumont (Cherry Valley).

Thunderstorms also drifted west of the mountains on Thursday afternoon, although that event was not as widespread. 0.35" fell in Hemet that afternoon, and 0.01" fell in Anza.

Monsoonal moisture had mostly departed the region by Sunday, with the only remaining moisture confined to the mountains and deserts.
