Earthquake Near Anza Shakes Region Sunday Morning

Posted June 12, 2005, 8:47 AM.

Residents of Southwest Riverside and North San Diego counties were shaken by a magnitude 5.6 earthquake (preliminary) on Sunday morning, centered about six miles east-south-east of Anza, about 30 miles east southeast of Hemet.

The earthquake struck at around 8:41am on the San Jacinto fault, which runs generally underneath the San Jacinto mountains. The shaking lasted for less than 30 seconds. See this USGS map for the quake's location. The USGS details on the quake show that it occurred at a depth of eight miles.

The quake was quickly followed by several minor aftershocks in the magnitude two range.

The last moderate earthquake felt in the region occurred on January 6th. That one was 4.4 on the richter scale with an epicenter near Fontana, up in San Bernardino County.

Minor damage, mainly due to items falling from shelves and minor structural damage has already been reported in the Hemet/San Jacinto Valley which sits directly on the fault line involved.

More details will be posted as they become available.
