Summer rain totals across the area; Flash Flood Watch in effect for Inland Empire and mountains

By John C. Toman. Posted July 13, 2012, 7:50 AM.

Overnight showers were heavy at times, depositing the first rainfall of the young season in Southern California.

By 7:30am Friday morning, rain totals were 0.36" in Beaumont's Cherry Valley, 0.33" in Menifee, 0.27" in Lake Elsinore, 0.20" in San Bernardino, and 0.11" in Riverside's Canyon Crest neighborhood.

Several other WeatherCurrents communities had recorded less than a tenth of an inch, and a few still had no measurable rainfall.

The higher totals were due to bursts of rainfall between 12am and 3am.

Forecasts had an upper level low continuing to pull monsoonal moisture over Southern California from a broad upper high. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are likely through the day, decreasing tonight as the low moves out.

The National Weather Service has put a Flash Flood Watch into effect through this evening for the Inland Empire and the San Jacinto, San Bernardino and Santa Ana mountains.
