Rice Canyon Fire Analysis Story

Posted November 5, 2007, 5:40 AM.

Tom Chester, from the Winterwarm area in Fallbrook, has provided a detailed analysis of the growth, speed and timeline of the fire as it quickly traveled from the Rice Canyon area in Rainbow into and across the Live Oak area of Fallbrook on October 22nd.

The complete story is available at Tom's website.

In particular, at the height of the fire on Monday, it was traveling at a rate of about 0.3 mph as it crossed I-15 and moved towards Wilt Road. Other recent big fires moved much more quickly (for example, 16 mph for the Cedar Fire). The western progress of the fire slowed when the winds, which had reached as much as 73 mph in Fallbrook, died down.

The story is very detailed and includes map, vegetation, terrain and wind plots. Wind data for the story was plotted from WeatherCurrents locations in Fallbrook and Temecula.
