Large Dust Devil Reported near Murrieta/Menifee border Tuesday

Posted September 26, 2007, 6:19 AM.

A landspout or dirt devil was reported near the Murrieta Mapleton area Tuesday afternoon, carrying debris, including a vinyl raft, into the sky.

The event happened near Antelope Road, Keller Road, and the I-215 freeway, around 2:15pm.

According to the report, the phenomena lasted about 10 minutes, working its way through an RV storage facility and briefly stopping traffic on Keller Road.

At one point, a blue two person vinyl raft was carried up into the funnel. Reportedly, birds and other debris were caught in the landspout as well.

"It was unlike any little dirt devil I had ever seen, " said Laura Lovell, who was in a car on the scene, and who contributed the report that made up this story. "It was large enough that I was afraid to drive near it ... People are probably wondering where their fancy raft went."

Dust devils are not uncommon in Southern California, especially inland, and are usually small and harmless.
